I Watched Marley & Me

Sob sob... Why am I always drawn to such shows knowing that it's gonna be a sad ending?

I'm so tempted never to celebrate another birthday for my dogs EVER. Although Marley didn't exactly die of old age, it contributed to his death. I was watching the show & wondering when Marley will pass on. I don't know the life span of a GR but I thought it's around 9 to 10 yrs. The couple got him shortly after marriage. It was at least 2 yrs before they had their 1st child. By the time Marley passed on, they already had 3 children & the 1st son is already quite big (8 or 9). Even if he wasn't euthanized, he would have died of old age soon enough.

I kept wondering if I would be able to make the decision for any of my dogs (euthanasia) if the situation ever happens to me. I truly don't know. A lifelong companion & best friend set to die by my decision. I may not be the 1 injecting him but I may very well be becoz the decision falls on me. How? How can I decide whether my loved 1 should live or die? He may pass on later without being euthanized. But to make the decision for him... it's simply too hard to contemplate. I just can't... I don't want them to die...

I was thinking... I'll keep all my dog's ashes. Should either me or Jeff pass on 1 day, I want my dog's ashes to be placed with ours. The plate should read "Here lies Jeffrey Loh & Jo Ng, accompanied for eternity by their beloved dogs so & so" or something to that extend. I expect that we will need a bigger space than most people judging from the fact that we'll probably keep many more dogs to come. Ya, I'm starting to get morbid. Time to move on from the topic.

I'm trying to read up on how to prolong their life by keeping them healthier. Right now, I'm reading this book I borrowed from the library, DogAge by Dondi S. Dahlgaard. There's a questionaire in the book that calculates your dog's biological age & compares it to his actual age. If his biological age is lower than his actual age, good job! If not, you'll be given tips on how to improve his health & prolong his healthy years. No harm trying it out. You can take the quiz online at www.dogage.com
